if you missed it) – a timely event to immerse yourself in helpful advice on alterations to your heritage or listed building is The Listed Property Show in London – held this year on February 9th
As an owner of a heritage or listed building contemplating renovation work there is much on offer at the show to help you bounce your ideas off industry experts and perhaps absorb new information. In short, it is a very time efficient way to spend a day or two doing research.
The event is held over two days and hosts industry experts available for one-to-one discussions, a programme of talks, suppliers, and practical demonstrations. The full programme of talks is available to review here
The programme of talks is packed – each around 45 minutes long. Even as an industry professional these talks are very absorbing! If you can visit for only one day the choice should be led by the talk topics. The talks that may be perhaps most poignant on the Saturday -depending on your building of course – are
12.30pm ‘Control of Dampness’;
3.30pm ‘The Importance of Considering Bats in Buildings’, and
4.15pm ‘Timber Frame Buildings’.
The talk regarding bats is of paramount importance if you suspect your building may be used at all by them as they are protected species. Any proposed building works that may disturb them (and to determine this you would require expert advice) will require managing to be carried out around their seasonal activity. This item is one of the key activities which could affect your building programme. The advice is to take early expert advice! Your conservation architect should be able to put you in touch with appropriately qualified people.
On the Sunday key talks to look out for are:
1.45pm ‘Conservation Architects: Great Expectations from a Bleak House’
2.30pm ‘Building Performance: Keeping Your Home Warm and Dry’
In between the talks you can duck out to gather industry literature from a wide range of suppliers. Such information could then be passed on to your conservation professional, should you engage one, to help your conversation with them to discuss your interests and ideas.
